Electricity bills can often take a chunk out of your monthly budget. However, with a few simple changes in your habits and home, you can reduce your energy consumption and lower your bill. Take a look at the checklist below and compare your own habits. How many are you already doing? Where could you improve?
-
Switch to LED bulbs; they consume less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs.
-
Ensure everyone in your household develops a habit of turning off lights when leaving a room.
-
Make the most of natural daylight during the day to reduce the need for artificial lighting.
-
Even when not in use, electronics on standby mode consume energy. Use smart power strips or unplug chargers, gaming consoles, and other devices.
-
Invest in ENERGY STAR® appliances that consume less energy by taking advantage of your co-op’s rebates.
-
Adjust your home's temperature settings automatically with a programmable Wi-Fi thermostat to save on heating and cooling costs.
-
Ensure your systems are well-maintained with regular HVAC maintenance.
-
Properly seal gaps and insulate your home to prevent air from escaping.
-
Ceiling fans can help distribute air efficiently.
-
Use cold water for laundry to significantly reduce energy consumption.
-
Instead of using a dryer, hang your clothes to dry naturally.
-
Maximize dishwasher efficiency by running full loads and using the energy-saving mode.
-
Lower your water heater's temperature to save on energy used for heating water. Even better, consider storage water heating or interruptible water heating.
-
Use lids on pots and pans and match the pan size to the burner to cook more efficiently.
-
When possible, use the microwave, air fryer, toaster oven, or slow cooker, as they use less energy than a full-sized oven.
-
MN residents may be eligible for a sales tax exemption on electric bills November-April each year if electricity is the primary source of heat in the home (residential accounts in WI are automatically exempt from sales tax November-April). To find out if you qualify, visit the MN Department of Revenue website and search for the 157 Fact Sheet. Then fill out, sign, and return the residential exemption form to ECE.
-
Improve attic and wall insulation to maintain a stable indoor temperature.
-
Open windows and use cross-ventilation to cool your home in mild weather.
A few more money-saving tips:
-
Avoid expensive accidents and injuries by educating your household about wise generator use and safe digging practices.
