Changing Gaits
Folks at Changing Gaits have seen the downward
spiral that job losses and foreclosures can set in
motion, and they are reaching out to help.
"A lot of people are living with a lot of anxiety
right now," said Teresa Nelson, executive director
of the non-profit organization near Brook Park, MN.
"Living with little, or the threat of little, can
lead to depression and anxiety, use of
substances...."
The Changing Gaits team uses horses to teach skills
that empower people of all ages to successfully
navigate life's challenges. A recent ECE Operation
Round UpĀ® grant of $1,250 helped the organization
with its outreach, helping it produce print
materials needed for the program.
"We also purchased gas and grocery cards to help our
clients on their journey after they've participated
in a couple of sessions here," Nelson said.
Changing Gaits was founded in 2004 by Nile (Guy)
Kaufman, a Certified Equine Specialist through
Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association
(EAGALA). The organization is faith-based and has a
strong addiction services component, but it also
offers help with family communication, youth and
teen issues, coping with poverty, team building and
leadership skills, and non-verbal communication.
"It's powerful, effective and it changes lives,"
Nelson said.
